The experience and benefits

Past the initial assessment sessions, the focus turns to developing powerful new perspectives.

The climate for self-exploration is created and reinforced. The process of analysis should let you set the tone of the conversation and the starting point. Our job is to listen carefully and understand your experience. New images and ideas will form and reform for both of us as we reflect on your experiences.

Considering and re-examining experiences over the weeks brings richer therapeutic outcomes, with considered conclusions and dynamic responses: greater self-awareness; opportunities to generate new coping skills; enhanced relationship skills or learning to manage self-limiting behaviours.

Energies previously misdirected can be used to help reorganise and create a more coherent sense of being or ‘self'.

 
‘Self' often seems to elude definition or encompass them all. Leading Australian psychiatrist Russell Meares defines ‘self' as the ‘the ordinary ongoing sense of personal existence'.

As you talk about your current sense of ‘self' and how you respond to events, we will consider the mechanisms that organise your life and explore the new connections and skills required to build resilience and spirit.

Complex emotions and submerged feelings can be difficult to articulate. Therapy is the chance to learn a new language of ‘self' which can help us untangle and manage our emotions and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

The philosopher William James suggested a language which resonates with therapists and clients:

  • a sense of vitality (movement)
  • reflective awareness (duality)
  • warmth and intimacy (positive feeling)
  • an ability to take effective action (agency)

The language of therapy offers a way of seeing ourselves and others - an essential tool in working towards:

  • Feeling happy
  • No longer feeling stuck or repeating mistakes and unproductive behaviours
  • Alleviating anxiety
  • Creating a stronger sense of identity
  • Managing our multiple and diverse daily roles
  • Building confidence and self-esteem
  • Strengthening personal relationships
